The Lost Gods

He looked upon the farthest shore
Into the deepest abyss he gazed
For a glimpse of the gods of lore
A chance to view, to stand amazed

He had searched far and wide
All his senses sharp, on the lookout
Never had he chosen either side
With a pure heart, he always sought

To refute or prove, once, for all
With unbiased and clear a mind
Faced he, many a stumble and fall
Undaunted, he sought their kind

On a lonely moonlight silver plain
He saw a speck of red, so far away
Over earth, which never felt any rain
Bright flash on dark sky, it simply lay

Miles beyond count, a weary path
The earth rumbled, sky thundered
Impending doom, nature’s wrath
Hidden chasms to trap, he floundered

At the very end, an empty campfire
Neither mortal or Immortal, saw he
A blink of an eye, hope turned to ire
A gleam, a glitter, on the ground, a key

Unadorned and unmarked it was, drab
Lying atop a plain wooden cabinet
Picked it up did he, with quick a grab
No fireworks lit or blaring trumpet

Using the key, the box lay wide open
An old and cracked mirror lay inside
He felt his anger grow, swell and ripen
All his hopes, dreams rudely dashed aside

His mind clouded over, he screamed
Shouts reverberated with malice
Tears welled in his eyes, he cried
Turned to the mirror, seeking solace

The mirror reflected his face, weary
Beaten and bruised, scarred all over
It broke into a smile, so small and sly
After all this, his search was finally over

He had found his God, lying inside
His God had been waiting, seeking him
His problems could be solved, Beside
The light that wasn’t, was now not so dim

He walked back home, upright
His God walked with him, in him
Everything wrong, was made right
The light would, now, never get dim

On and on...

The Road stretches on forever
Through starlight and sunshine,
Paved of gold by a true believer
Always with a twist, never in a line.

A form walks the path, so lone
A light shines from within, so bright,
Nothing but flesh wrapped over bone
A million amongst the living in sight.

She walks alone, a bitter and saddened soul
Trapped within her, soundless screams.
An actor on the stage, without a role
She roams in her sleep, searching for dreams.

Behind her he walks, so near yet so far,
Collecting all the blood that was spilled
He walks on ahead, so near yet so far,
Removing all the hurdles that would’ve killed.

Her creased heart, burdened with worries,
He breaks and builds it back again.
Encompassing her mind by his memories,
Filled with many a loss, and but a few gain.

Her pretty eyes, blinded by light unearthly.
He becomes darkness epitomized,
To draw it unto himself, completely,
And die a thousand deaths, immortalized.

The stars shatter in the sky as she walks,
He fractures to spread the light within.
All life dries and wither away as she talks,
He bleeds to spread the life within.

She looks to the heavens for prayers.
All she sees are comets that crash and burn,
On herself they form gaping craters,
And still she hopes, never to learn.

He tries to catch the stars as they fall,
Sacrifice all that he has, and all that he is,
An act of defiance so grand, so small,
To save all that she was, and all that she is.

The distance between them too great,
Oceans of sorrow and joy in between.
Ever to blame, the cruel mistress Fate,
And their guardian angels, none too keen.

Years apart and years together they spent,
Always aware of each other, but never knowing.
Tried to cheat, old Father Time, wrinkled and bent,
Like two streams, in different directions, always flowing.

Their hearts reach out in search of one other,
Their thoughts, faster than light can ever travel.
Stronger than diamonds, a bond unlike another,
And yet so fragile, as a spiders web, unravel.

All the dust that had risen, settles down,
The flame left the ground scarred, scorched,
Nothing but a hazy grey and a dull brown.
They wander aimlessly, starved, parched,

Lost behind the mask of a smiling clown,
With all their emotions wrung high and dry,
With neither an evil smile nor a caring frown.
They plod on and on, apart till they die,

Their dying breath, their beating hearts, slowing
Between all the crying, a new ending.
Their thoughts and their dreams, ever shrinking,
Between all the kissing, an old beginning.

Forever in life divided, yet in death united.
Eyes closed, they go forth, hand in hand.
Up above, lightening flashed, thunder rolled,
Green and bright with Life, now the land,

The flowers bloom away, pretty and colourful,
The winds pick up, and fragrance lives on,
Nature reclaims what was its, so wonderful
The Circle continues, and Life goes on and on….
